Breast Reduction

In this article, we will be targeting why breast Reduction surgeries are done, how they are being done, and what are the advantages and disadvantages associated with this surgery.

How is it done?

Generally, in breast reduction surgeries an overnight stay at the hospital is required so as to assure that when patient return back to her house she is fit for her daily routine life and to avoid any complications which may arise due to surgery.

For the surgery, an anesthetic is deployed for local anesthesia so that patient feels fully comfortable while this surgery is carried out. Once the local anesthesia is given main surgery starts, in which the number of scars is depended upon the volume of tissues need to be removed and the distance of areola or nipples to be uplifted, in general, a vertical scar is made from the areola to folds of the breast and a horizontal scar at the bottom of the folds.

With an advancement in technology now-a-days a single incision around the areola can be done to remove the additional amount of breast tissue. But the accuracy of the scars and the volume of reduction can be accurately judged once a visual inspection is carried out by a doctor/aesthetic consultant.

After the surgery has been carried out the patient is given a comfortable brassier like dressing which is worn by her so that a level of comfort will be maintained all the time.

Preparation for the surgery

The patient needs to stop herbal and prescribed medication or consumption of any kind of vitamins which affect bleeding to decrease. The patient needs to prepare her body for treatment by ceasing on smoking at least 2 weeks prior the surgery so that her body will be completely adaptive for the surgery to be carried out. A detailed discussion regarding life style and cuisine habits needs to be discussed with the cosmetic surgeon/consultant during the counseling, and hence counseling/consultancy is very much needed before you proceed for this surgery.

Side effects Involved

Nipple necrosis leading to loss of nipples or areola, this is a very rare occurrence but utmost care should be taken.

1. Inability to breast feed after the surgery

Though with the modernisation of the technology, this side effect is also very unlikely to happen as most of the ladies are able to breast feed after the surgery, as while surgery is carried out a special attention is given to breast ducts which run beneath the nipples and at any time of the surgery these ducts are intact.

In lieu with this side effect, it is always advised to all the patients that these surgeries to be carried out by experienced surgeons at renowned and well-equipped hospitals. Now-a-days to reduce cost sub-standard centres are also offering these surgeries at much cheaper rates but these side effects to be considered while you are choosing hospital and doctor for the surgery.

2. Loss of sensation

A temporary loss of sensation might occur in the breast as surgery involves cutting through some nerves, but this sensation resumes after a period of time and hence has a temporary occurrence.

3. Scar

Depending on the healing of the body small amount of scar is visible on the breast after recovery, this scars may vary from a thin invisible line to a well-seen mark.
